![]() The whole city is under the control of Kang who rules from his centrally located fortress while other supervillains are scattered about Chronopolis, each in possession of a Nexus shard you’ll need to collect in order to open a portal to summon allies for the big boss fight against Kang. While an impressive backdrop for the first level, Chronopolis only gets more interesting the more you play as you realize it is a complex merging of multiple time-shift versions of Manhattan, along with other fictional Marvel locales such as Thor’s homeworld of Asgard, the Inhuman city of Attilan, the Kree homeworld of Hala, and a Nazi whitewashed version of Red Skull’s Hydra Empire. Kang the Conqueror is using the Infinity Stone of Time to assemble his own dark army from across the Marvel multiverse along with notable landmarks he has fashioned into a single megacity, Chronopolis, which is where we meet up with the Guardians of the Galaxy in the opening level of the game. ![]() While LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 is easily playable as a standalone game those who have played the 2013 original will have a slight upper hand, at least with the storyline, and those current with events from Marvel’s 2015 Secret Wars will enjoy lots of plotline crossovers. I’m not going to go into detail on the rest of the unlockable cast because, frankly, there are just too many plus, surprises are fun! Headlining the updated roster are the Guardians of the Galaxy, and fresh off their canceled-after-one-season show, the Inhumans. Sadly, Fox maintains an Iron Man grip on their X-Men property, so our favorite mutants won’t be coming out to play, but in their place we get just about every other super hero you’ve ever heard of, and maybe a few you haven’t, in LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2. While the game sits on the brink of some tired gameplay at times, it manages to keep things fresh and interesting enough to make it worth your while.Marvel fans assemble! It’s time to suit up for the biggest ensemble super-hero game allowed by law…or at least strategic licensed marketing. Bottom line, you’ll certainly get your money’s worth out of it. You don’t even have to go at it alone as you can co-op as a team as well, just like the superheroes do! Lastly, there’s the option to battle online against other players. ![]() There is an abundance of things to do and collect, enough, in fact, to pour countless hours into it for those looking to 100% the game. Unfortunately, that was not the case and I had to redo the rather long level again.Įven taking into account some of those negatives, Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 is a really good game to play. I waited and let it play out, hoping to get to the end so it would save and I could continue on. After finishing an early level the scene froze on screen yet I could hear the game continuing on in the background. It wasn’t the only issue with the cut scenes either. Even from the intro, you can see issues with frame rates, it’s not jittery or overly terrible, but there are some noticeable spots where the scenes aren’t smooth. Where the game runs into issues, however, is during the cutscenes. The actual gameplay is silky smooth and looks great both docked and hand-held. Let’s switch gears for a second and talk performance on the Switch itself. “The actual gameplay is silky smooth and looks great both docked and hand-held.” While the bulk of the story and action take place in Chronopolis, which gives players a nice open world setting to play around in, getting to that point feels slightly dated. The second part and perhaps the most important is the level design. ![]() The robust cast of characters, each with their own special moves, gives us one part of the equation. If you’ve played at least one of the titles in the past you are likely familiar with this concept but to keep things fresh there needs to be some diversity to the levels and characters. The next part of that Lego formula is the gameplay: destroy, build, and collect coins. getting pecked in the face by chickens is pretty funny to watch. While an older audience may not be quite as amused with some of it, I can guarantee my kids will have plenty of laughs playing. Apart from the giant band of superheroes, one thing the story provides that’s a long-running staple of Lego games is humor. This “something for everyone” approach to the characters is great for ardent Marvel fans, but also helps in getting relative newcomers acquainted as well it’s a win-win. While all the most recognizable names are present, a good number of “lesser known” characters play roles as well. The story is quite entertaining throughout as players control a rather enormous cast of characters. “It’s the familiar gameplay that is both the biggest asset and drawback in Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2.”
